Missionaries React to Dedication of Cameroon

Dedication of Cameroon: Sacred Ground

I returned from Yaounde, Cameroon last night. It was a three-day trip full of so many manifestations of love and miracles. I was blessed to visit with several people I helped convert and bring into the gospel. It was so touching and inspiring to see so many people anxiously engaged in the work of God, and persevering through the hardships they face constantly. I visited with Evelyne, Etienne, and Florence. While they have faced struggles and persecution, they have remained active.

Elder Holland dedicated the country of Cameroon to the preaching of the gospel at 7:30 a.m. atop one of Yaounde's large hills, overlooking the city and other hills and jungle. Although we the missionaries did not attend, we heard of the power of the Spirit that was present. This Spirit was present as Elder Holland spoke to the Cameroonian public and members of the church, recounting the impressions he had received. His prayer compared the missionary work to the rock upon which it was given in the hill—a rock of Christ with the potential to roll and grow beyond measure.

I understand so much clearer why I am serving. I know that Elder Holland is an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ. I have never looked so deeply into someone’s eyes, nor have I ever had someone look so deeply into mine. There is nothing false or questionable about this man. He is called by and acts with the authority and power of God.

We shook the hand of Elder Holland. I will never forget the experience of today. It was a wonderful privilege to hear him speak and prophesy. He pronounced a blessing upon all the people of this country, and I know that everything he said in his dedicatory prayer will be fulfilled. I am still trying to compose myself. What a privilege it was to gaze into those piercing blue eyes and listen to his apostolic voice touch the depths of my heart. What I learned I will never forget, for all that was said today found its emotional place in my soul.

Elder Holland spoke about pretty much every issue that these people could raise. One of my favorite quotes was: "This isn't just a church; it's more than a simple choice between the Jehovah's Witnesses' and the Methodists. This is THE truth." He talked a lot about how it is the gospel alone that can solve the world’s problems—not the wars, politics, plans or designs of men.

Another point I remember well was when he was talking about how our church doesn't have a "symbol" like many others. We've all heard the quote about how the members themselves are our symbol, but he gave his. He said that if he could choose a symbol, it would be two missionaries. Then, he said "You are worthy symbols.”

We had the wonderful opportunity to have a zone conference with Elder Holland. He said so many things that have impacted my life. The most significant/powerful thing that he did was to bear testimony of the Savior. He said, "When you know, you know. Anything you do or say could not add to or subtract from my testimony. You could make me happy, you could make me sad. But you can’t change the fact that I know." His apostolic testimony was one of the most powerful moments of my life. I know he has had a special witness of Jesus Christ. I know that Jesus Christ lives. This message is true. My joy is full. I am overflowing with happiness and peace. I cannot deny the witness that Elder Holland left. And I am so grateful to be a missionary here in Africa.

I got the opportunity to meet Elder Holland personally, and be taught by him—which was a powerful, faith-building experience. His message to us focused on three important things: focusing on the scriptures to teach the doctrines; enjoying our time on our missions, and getting what we want out of our mission; and his personal testimony of the truthfulness of the Church and the divinity of what we are doing in Cameroon. It was really powerful. I love that man, and now I’ve got a new favorite quote form an Apostle. He said, "A boy becomes a man when he has served in Cameroon!" He loved his mission, and loves the missionaries.

Elder Holland didn't have to recite some preplanned talk, but he was able to just share exactly what he needed to. It was huge when he looked at us and said "Nothing on earth can change my testimony. You can make me happy or disappointed, but nothing you can do will subtract from my testimony." That was impressive and has become a lifetime goal for me.
